What is an air source heat pump?
An air-source heat pump can provide efficient heating and cooling for your home. When properly installed, an air-source heat pump can deliver up to three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes. This is possible because a heat pump transfers heat rather than converting it from a fuel like combustion heating systems.
- An ASHP uses a refrigerant system involving a compressor and a condenser to absorb heat from the outside air and release it inside. It can also work in reverse to cool the building.
- The machine’s refrigerant absorbs warmth from outside and becomes a gas as it heats up beyond -50°C.
- The gas is compressed, which results in it warming up due to the pressure increase. It then transfers this heat to your central heating system’s water.
- When you’re not using your heating system, you can store the excess fluid in a hot water cylinder.
